Generative Art

I. Randomness

All the outputs on the left follow the same algorithm as the one on the right.

If the algorithm, or in a broader way, the ideas of algorithmic systems like cellular automata or L-system, is the "concept" and code is the "medium", then the visual outcome is just a container that exhibits the concept. In this sense, the artwork shouldn't be only about the outcome of the algorithm, for that the artwork itself is an indiscerptible compound of both the algorithm and its "magic effect". Hence I'd argue that we should always be cautious to take "making pretty images" as our goal when designing and polishing the algorithm. The final outcome (whatever form of representation it is) cannot be the only drive of making generative artworks, if we want to call it a piece of art at all.
